Mountain Shadows Hotel is being sold as a going concern, situated in the heart of the Southern Drakensberg. Easily accessible between Elliot and Barkly East on top of the Barkly pass.

Mountain Shadows forms a gateway to the touristic mountain passes, roads and access to surrounding areas. It is also situated in a very active and prosperous farming community, with many major developments taking place on farms. Due to regular and loyal clientele Mountain Shadows has overcome the Covid-19 lockdown by managing to do 70% of their normal occupancy during the previous financial year and this year they are on par with 2019 figure before the pandemic hit.

The owner, Ria Reabow has been running the hotel since 2005 when her parents bought the hotel and she then again took it over from her parents when they retired.


Living in Elliot with a demanding farming business that she runs with her husband and with the children growing up and demanding more time from her, Ria has limited time to give her full attention to the Hotel and is normally only at the hotel between 10am and 4pm and very seldom over the weekend.


The staff are amazingly well trained and have taken hospitality to another level. I have been staying there as a guest when I travel for business, on one occasion when it was a full house with 42 guests having dinner and breakfast, there was no panic and the staff took it in their stride.


A comfortable flatlet in the hotel is ideal accommodation for your own privacy but still onsite.


The hotel consists of 21 bedrooms all with en-suite bathrooms, TV’s and has been maintained regularly and linen is frequently replaced. Conference room facilities, ablution block in place to develop a camping park.


Water supply from Spring high up in the mountains and a borehole on the property.
